Is there anything better than instant happiness? Some people would probably say Yes: Instant money, instant love, even instant coffee. But what if you could actually conjure up happiness without having to do much? Would you try it? If so, grab your instant coffee and continue reading to discover the 3 easiest ways I’ve found to instantly combat many of life’s issues including fear, doubt, depression, worry, and more.
1. Take an outdoor walk or light jog in the morning
Now please don’t write me off! I know you’ve heard it a thousand times. People who exercise on a daily basis experience better health and less stress, but what I’ve found to be true about my morning walks is not only are they calming, but everyone else who you see walking is in the peak mood of their day. You will hear endless good mornings, along with genuine waves of hello and heart-felt eye contact. Another great benefit of an outdoor walk is the chance to experience nature. Nature can make a big impact on how we feel. While on your walk, take a minute to observe the birds chirping, the breath of fresh air in your nostrils, and the soft beam of sunshine dancing above your head. With all of this happening simultaneously you will have no choice but to feel happy.
2. Think about your most valued memory (aka remember something you’re grateful for)
Oh, how sweet memories can be. This is probably my favorite way to instantly feel better about everything that may not be going my way in life. As soon as I’m feeling overwhelmed, I close my eyes and think about a time that brought me joy. Like the last time I held my grandmother’s hand or the memory of my brother and I jumping from our mother’s bed to her bench and back to her bed again (what a good time I had as a child). I instantly feel so grateful for all of the times I’ve been blessed with; suddenly there is no more room for anxiety or depression. It’s an instant mood booster!
3. Prayer, Meditation, or a Nap
It might surprise you how much setting aside just 10 minutes to clear your mind can do for you. Try saying a short prayer followed by some calming music. This can help to reduce the stress you feel and give you a little more willpower to continue with your day. Meditation is also popular. It is a technique used to refocus the mind and stabilize thoughts. If all else fails, try taking a nap. Naps have many benefits, but in this case, a short nap has the ability to improve your mood. Naps can also enhance cognitive performance. Not only will you feel better when you wake up, you’ll be able to think and reason better as well. Go ahead and grab your favorite pillow right now. Naps aren’t just for kids anymore!
The reality is no one’s life is perfect. There will always be difficult times. Trying to avoid hard times is like a bird trying to avoid flying through the sky without ever encountering rain. The key is focusing on the things you are able to control. YOU can go for a walk. YOU can recall good memories. YOU can take a nap. YOU can be as happy as you make yourself. Feel free to get as high as you want off of happiness.
