The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) has announced the appointment of Jerome “Junkyard Dog” Williams as its latest Sports Ambassador. Williams joins the ranks of the AAU Youth Basketball Advisory Council (YBAC), which is led by the renowned 10-time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony.
This strategic appointment marks a significant step in the AAU’s mission to bolster the development and foundational support of youth basketball for athletes, coaches, and parents. Williams brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as an NBA Global Ambassador. His responsibilities as an AAU Ambassador will have him traveling across the nation, mentoring young athletes and promoting the AAU’s values and initiatives.
AAU President Jo Mirza expressed enthusiasm for Williams’ appointment, stating, “The new AAU is about involving AAU alumni who align with our mission of ‘Sports For All, Forever’ and are committed to giving back on and off the court. Jerome Williams embodies that mission with his dedicated efforts toward young athletes.”
Williams is set to participate in several high-profile events, including the AAU Basketball World Championships, the AAU Junior Olympic Games, the NBA Summer League, and the NBA & WNBA All Star Games. His engagement will include outreach through the AAU Cares and AAU Reads programs, which aim to support educational initiatives for underserved youth, providing books and resources at AAU events.
At this year’s Times Square Takeover 3v3 tournament, Williams dedicated time to interacting with players and coaches, sharing insights from his NBA career and knowledge about avenues for success both in sports and life. His commitment to youth education is further demonstrated through his authorship of several books aimed at young readers, focusing on themes of teamwork, community, and perseverance. His upcoming book, titled *R.O.L.E. Player*, is eagerly anticipated by fans and aspiring athletes alike.
“My life has been filled with countless opportunities tied to sports & education largely because of the ‘Role-player mindset’ I’ve carried since elementary school,” said Williams. “I feel AAU is the best place for families to develop the tools needed for their kids to be successful in life.”
Beyond basketball, Williams is actively involved in community programs like the NBA’s “Basketball Without Borders” and “Shooting for Peace,” which promote peaceful engagement among youth across North America.
With his passion for youth development and community empowerment, Jerome Williams is poised to be a pivotal figure in spreading the AAU’s message to the next generation of athletes.
