The New England Patriots are suddenly in the market for another Quarterback. With Mac Jones out for the foreseeable future with an ankle injury and Brian Hoyer sidelined with a concussion the Patriots enter next week with Bailey Zappe at the helm. Even if Hoyer and Jones are able to play soon it makes sense to add some practice squad depth to the important position. Here are five solid options they may be considering.
Dennis McCarthy: The 6’6” Tom Brady apprentice knows the system inside and out, a series of injuries kept him from reaching his full potential at Boston College but he’s a good big, strong, QB that can extend plays and knows how things work in Foxboro. Experience is his limiting factor.
Jake Dolegala: Another local prospect, the 6’7” CFL quarterback played at Central Connecticut and had three stints on the Patriots practice squad, Dolegala was arrested and suspended for DUI in Camada last week, knowing Belichick that will likely hurt his chances at playing in New England again.
Cam Newton: The 6’5” former MVP has been critical of the Patriot way since his release, which makes a reunion unlikely, however, Belichick held him in high regard and the former Patriots starter is familiar with the system. One major caveat is nobody knows how Cam will react to being a backup.
Garrett Gilbert: The 6’4” NFL journeyman is currently a free agent, and with two stints om the Patriots practice squad under his belt he seems like a good possibility.
Blake Bortles: The 6’5” third overall pick set franchise records for Jacksonville en route to an AFC Championship appearance, however in recent years he seems to have lost his excellence. The free agent was a backup in New Orleans and Green Bay last season but he is available and brings plenty of experience.
