The ability to cope with adversity is critical to succeeding in this industry, where uncertainty is the common denominator of every negotiation.

“Among the soft skills that I naturally possess or developed while growing up, probably one of the most important ones for my personal success is that I have a rather aggressive personality,” said Mirza during a recent video interview. “I’m not the type of guy that gives up very easily.”

Mirza is today regarded as an authority on sales and revenue generation. For years, Mirza and his team at Rose Garden Consulting have assisted hundreds of companies nationwide in building up top-tier sales teams and achieving continuous revenue growth. Mirza’s years of experience in the sales industry have led him to be frequently featured in various business magazines, including  Forbes, INC. Magazine, and Business Insider.

Mirza connected from his office at the Rose Garden Consulting headquarters for an exclusive Zoom interview in which he shared what he considers to be the essential qualities of a successful salesperson. During this interview, he reflected on the importance of perseverance and tenacity to prosper in this industry.

Mirza acquired the experience that set him up to become one of the most influential sales consultants in America in the insurance industry. During his early career, he worked for a distinguished life insurance company, where he became the number one agent in annual premiums sold nationwide. As Mirza explains, grit was undoubtedly one of the most critical elements in his success as an insurance sales representative.

Grit “was probably one of the soft skills that helped me the most because selling insurance is very difficult,” said Mirza. “In my opinion, it is the most difficult sale you can possibly make.”

Mirza views tenacity and resilience as the most critical determinants of success in the sales industry. Those individuals with the determination to overcome adversity and the ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment have higher chances of thriving in the highly competitive world of sales.

In sales, the need for a strong determination “comes out quite often in many different ways,” said Mirza. “When it comes to hitting a difficult goal or excelling at something that is challenging, I have a natural tendency not to stop working for what I want until I reach it.”

Throughout his life, Mirza learned to change his perspective about adversity. For him, an obstacle should not be regarded as an impenetrable barrier; instead, Mirza views the challenges he has faced in his career as tests of his strength of character.

“I don’t look at obstacles as an excuse for why I can’t achieve something; instead, I look at them as something that I need to overcome,” said Mirza. “It is not that I look at obstacles as opportunities. For me, adversity is just something standing in the way until I overcome it rather than something blocking me.”

Mirza describes that this seemingly simple change in perspective has proven to be highly transformative. He encourages others to adopt this mindset as a guide to thrive in sales or any other challenging endeavor.

“Most people are like, ‘oh, because of this, I can’t do X.’ No! You just need to get rid of it, and then you can,” said Mirza. “It’s just a simple reframing that has been really helpful.”

Mirza does not sugarcoat what it takes to succeed in the sales industry. In his frank and, at times, unapologetic manner, he criticizes the self-declared sales gurus who profit from selling shortcuts to find success in this industry. As Mirza explains, growing in the world of business requires implementing the right processes and embracing hardship as part of the journey.

Over the past years, Mirza and his team at Rose Garden Consulting have worked with hundreds of business leaders across multiple industries, teaching them the principles of building a highly productive sales team. Today, he continues to assist companies and entrepreneurs across the country in achieving sustainable exponential growth.
