The world of art is all about expression. A paintbrush is used to transfer thoughts to a canvas and allow everything inside to pour out. Anybody can create art, and everyone has their own unique style of expression.

Matthew Gwyer, a young artist based out of Maine who’s liquid painting series have been attracting attention online, has been honing his own artistic expression for years.

Gwyer has agreed to share his history as an artist with us as well as the things that motivated him to pick up the paintbrush in the first place.

Gwyer has been teaching himself new skills as an artist since he started painting in 2014. His first instinct was to turn to the internet, where he found inspiration for his craft.

For Matthew Gwyer, art is not only a form of expression, but a way to escape.

It was always important for Gwyer to learn how to draw from memory. With this goal in mind, he would reference images on the web and practice drawing them repeatedly. Eventually, he was able to recreate images without a reference.

Art became a great stress reliever for him in between work and school. Gwyer would sit at his desk with a pencil and paper practicing his talent.

Over time Gwyer began to explore new types of art. At this point, he considered himself only a pencil-based artist, but he was ready to branch out. It was time to explore his abstract side with oil paints.

While attending the University of Southern Maine, Matthew Gwyer enrolled in a studio drawing course to receive professional training.

Here, he studied in depth the works of Salvador Dalí. Matthew Gwyer described Dalí’s work as calming and relaxing. One painting of his in particular, Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee around a Pomegranate a Second Before Waking, really caught Gwyer’s artistic eye. He spoke of his fascination with the piece and admired the sheer detail in the pomegranate.

By allowing himself the freedom to explore, Gwyer has discovered new ways to express his inner thoughts and emotions through art.

On Matthew Gwyer’s website, he sells artwork and makes custom pieces for customers. Gwyer has already sold out his first liquified painting series.

“I create pieces that are evocative to look at,” says Gwyer.

Gwyer hopes that his art will continue to line the halls of people’s homes, and he is looking forward to creating more pieces.

While Gwyer is looking forward to creating more custom artwork, he also leaves us with a final note for aspiring artists:

“Think outside the box.”
